When you first look at Class of 2031 point guard Mark Bernal III, the word “undersized” might come to mind for some people. But the second the ball tips, all of that talk disappears quickly. The Arizona native has built his game off grit, toughness, confidence, and an undeniable passion for basketball that jumps off the floor every possession.
Currently running with the AZ Phenoms and NorTerra Canyon Middle School, Bernal continues to prove that heart and skill can outweigh height every single time. He’s another tough guard coming out of Arizona that refuses to back down from bigger competition. In fact, he seems to thrive in those moments.
Mark is the definition of scrappy. Whether it’s diving for loose balls, jumping passing lanes for quick steals, or attacking defenders without hesitation, his motor never stops. Offensively, he’s a true 3-level scorer that can hurt defenses in multiple ways. He can catch fire from deep coming off a screen, slash to the rim with speed, or stop on a dime and create his own shot. The scary part is how explosive he becomes the moment the ball touches his hands — one quick move and he’s already in another gear before defenders can even react.

His handle is tight, controlled, and creative, allowing him to break pressure and create space at will. Add in his laser-sharp passing ability, and you have a point guard that understands how to control tempo while keeping teammates involved. Bernal’s basketball IQ stands out immediately, especially with how he understands spacing and reads defensive rotations.
What makes his game even more intriguing is his shooting ability. Mark owns a super quick release and deep range that forces defenders to pick him up early. He’s currently shooting around 45% from three-point range while knocking down nearly 90% from the free throw line — impressive numbers for any player, especially at his age. He can get streaky from beyond the arc, and once he sees a couple go in, he becomes extremely dangerous offensively.

He’s also fearless in pressure moments. Big shot? Big possession? Tight game? Bernal doesn’t flinch. He embraces those situations with confidence beyond his years. And if you sleep on him offensively, he’s capable of dropping 30 points before you even realize what happened — and trust me, it’s already been done.
Most recently, Bernal helped capture the Made Hoops Winter Circuit Jr. EYBL championship while also leading NorTerra Canyon Middle School to both a North Valley Athletic Conference Championship and becoming DVCC Conference Champions. Winning follows players who understand how to compete, and Mark Bernal III is proving exactly that.
Arizona continues to produce talented guards with toughness and swagger, and Mark Bernal III looks ready to add his name to that growing list. The size may catch your attention at first — but his game is what keeps everybody watching.
